David did an interview last January (2016) with Charlie Kocourek for his Jack Bench Woodworking channel on YouTube. David discussed with Charlie his latest work in progress, Sensei. Charlie has integrated pics of the completed piece with this interview in which David discusses the intense process of turning such a large, hollow vessel.

In this brief video I am just doing the final motions of thread chasing a sixteen piece, segmented, African Blackwood ring using a 16 tpi internal thread chaser. I used this ring as an insert on the top of a 32 inch tall hollow vessel titled Sensei, to accept the threaded lid.

Taped in David’s Workshop/Studio in Santa Rosa, California in May 2015, Tommy and his crew flew out from Boston to meet with David as part of the Rough Cut Master Showcase Series. David shows Tommy how he builds his spectacular turned hollow wooden vessels. This project is made from maple burl, poplar, and ebony and accented with gold leaf.

This class will focus primarily on spindle turning which is the safest form of woodturning and an excellent way to become familiar with the lathe and learn about the tools. Eucalyptus Vessel

David describes a hollow vessel that he turned from curly eucalyptus and how he created a harlequin pattern on the surface using a liquid frisket (sign painters mask) to control the design. The diamond patterns are gilded with silver leaf and copper leaf and treated with various chemicals to create a patina.

David displays and describes how he created his award winning spalted quilted maple burl vessel titled “Alchemist’s Vessel”. This piece won Best Turning at the Artistry in Wood show held at the Sonoma County Museum in 2009. This piece also was exhibited in the Maple Medley Show at the American Association of Woodturners Symposium in June 2010 and appeared on the back cover of the June 2010 issue of American Woodturner magazine.
